(n. 14 may. 1944, Modesto, Cal., EE.UU.).

Director y productor de cine estadounidense. Estudió cine en la Universidad de California del Sur. THX 1138 (1971), fue su primera película y obtuvo un sorprendente éxito con su siguiente trabajo, American Graffiti (1973). Escribió y dirigió el inmensamente popular filme de ciencia ficción La guerra de las galaxias (1977), que impuso innovadores efectos computacionales. Posteriormente formó su propia compañía productora, Lucasfilms (1978), la división de efectos especiales Industrial Light and Magic, y produjo las continuaciones de La guerra de las galaxias, El imperio contraataca (1980) y El regreso del jedi (1993). También produjo En busca del arca perdida de Steven Spielberg (1981) y sus continuaciones, para regresar a la dirección en La amenaza fantasma (1999), el primer episodio que revela el inicio de la saga de La guerra de las galaxias, a la que le siguieron otras películas de la serie.
